US Open 2011

What an exciting year for the 111th US Open Golf Tournament.  The best players in the world, professional and amateur, really put on quite a performance this year at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland featured on digital satellite television. Records were broken and success belonged to the tournament winner, Rory McIlroy.  It was a fun tournament to watch, even if the announcers and golfers still mentioned the not present Tiger Woods.  While I wish everyone would hop off of the Tiger-train, at the end of the day, it was about Rory and his efforts.  Here is a look at the players who made the top three at Congressional for the US Open.

  1. Rory McIlroy is a twenty-two year old from Northern Ireland.  He turned pro at the age of 18, and he has been making waves these past couple of years.  He played undeniably well at Congressional, and broke twelve different records in doing so.  He finished up with the win by eight total shots, which is incredibly impressive, especially considering his age.  Most people want to compare him to Tiger Woods, and he may even do the same, but I’m not going to.  I think Rory McIlroy has something different to bring to the game of golf.
  2. Jason Day is from Australia, and he is twenty-three years old.  In this year, he has had seven top ten finishes, and two of those have been second place finishes at that.  Second place at the US Open and a second place finish at the Masters is not too shabby.  Like, Rory, Jason is bringing some newer and younger talent to the sport of golf, and he is definitely someone that we will be seeing for a good while at the top of the placements.
  3. Kevin Chappell is a twenty-four year old who turned pro in the year 2008.  He is from the United States, and this was his first US Open appearance.  In fact, the 2011 US Open was his first major start, and to finish out with a top 3 finish is quite impressive.  Kevin himself said that his placement in this tournament was a huge relief for him, and he is looking forward to preparing for more tournaments and especially for next year’s tournaments.
